Where Ngorongoro tours start
Most visitors begin in Arusha. The road to the Ngorongoro area is about 180 km and takes roughly 3 to 4 hours, so a day trip from Arusha is a long day and many people prefer to sleep closer. Karatu lies about 14 km from the Loduare Gate, the main entrance, and works as a base for a visit to the crater. Zanzibar is a flight away from the mainland, and a crater visit from there starts with that flight.
Tours are not directly comparable by headline price. Each one bundles permits, a vehicle, lodging and meals differently, so look at what is inside before you look at the number.

What to compare before you book
Check each line, because the headline price alone tells you little.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Start and end point | Arusha, Karatu or another town changes the length of the day and the return time |
| Private or shared vehicle | The Crater Service Fee is per vehicle, so sharing spreads it |
| Permits actually paid | Entry fee, vehicle permit and crater descent are separate lines |
| Crater descent | Confirm that the descent into the crater is part of the plan |
| Lodging inside or outside | Nights inside the conservation area carry extra nightly charges |
| Meals and transfers | Check what is included at lunch and on the way to the gate |
| Flights | Needed from Zanzibar; ask for exact connections and the return time |
The amounts for each fee line are on the fees page. If a tour quotes one total, ask which lines it contains.
Choosing a starting point
Three common ways in.
From Arusha
The most common start, and the point where most flights and transfers arrive. The distance and drive time are on the Arusha to Ngorongoro page. Do not plan to drive back in the dark, as overland driving after dark is discouraged.
Arusha to Ngorongoro โFrom Karatu
Staying in Karatu and visiting the crater as a day trip is a separate plan from sleeping on the rim. Pickup, drive time and return are the operator's to confirm, and the 14 km is the distance to the gate, not to the crater floor.
Karatu โFrom Zanzibar
A combined mainland and Zanzibar trip needs no extra visa for crossing between the two. Ask an operator for the flight times and the return before you book any single-day plan.
Visa and entry โAdd-ons within the conservation area
Extras that can change the length of a tour.

Olduvai Gorge
A museum and fossil sites inside the conservation area.

Empakaai crater
A guided walk to a crater lake, with an armed ranger.

Maasai village visits
Fees and manners for a visit.
Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara are separate parks with their own tariffs, so they add cost on top. The safari page explains how a crater game drive itself works.
Ngorongoro tours: frequently asked questions
Is a day trip from Arusha realistic?
It is possible, but the road is about 180 km and 3 to 4 hours each way to the Ngorongoro area, before any time on the crater floor. Many travelers sleep in Karatu or near the rim instead.
Does the tour price include the park fees?
Not necessarily. Entry fee, Crater Service Fee and vehicle permit are separate lines, and some tours include them while others list them separately. Ask for the list of what is covered.
Can I visit the crater from Zanzibar?
You first have to reach the mainland, usually by flight. No extra visa is needed just for travelling between the mainland and Zanzibar. Confirm the connections and return time with the operator.
Is a private vehicle worth it?
The Crater Service Fee is charged per vehicle, so a full shared vehicle spreads it across more people. A private vehicle gives you control over timing. The choice depends on your group.
Can I buy my permit at the gate?
Do not plan on it. Permits are arranged through SafariPortal v2 and operators pay before the safari date. See the fees page.
