Arusha to Ngorongoro at a glance

Most safaris to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area start in Arusha. The road to the conservation area is about 180 km, and a drive of 3 to 4 hours is a sensible planning figure. The distance to the Loduare Gate, the main entrance, is often given as about 160 km, with about 2 hours quoted on paved road. Plan for the longer time, because traffic, stops and the end point you choose change the result.

Note that these figures end at the conservation area or its gate. They do not include the climb to the crater rim or the descent to the crater floor. Add those to your day.

Kilimanjaro Airport and the road north

What to expect after you land.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport

Kilimanjaro International Airport is the main entry point for Ngorongoro trips. From there you continue by road, by taxi or by a transfer arranged with your operator, or on a charter flight. Do not rely on a free airport shuttle. Agree the pickup, the price and the destination before you land.

Lake Manyara as an alternative

Lake Manyara Airport (LKY) lies in the Karatu district. It is handled mostly as a charter and non-scheduled airport, so check current flights with your operator before building a plan around it.

Stop in Karatu

Many travelers sleep in Karatu to shorten the next morning. It puts you before the Loduare Gate and keeps the early descent manageable. See the Karatu guide.

Zanzibar and the mainland

Moving between the mainland and Zanzibar does not require a second visa. A flight and a crater safari are still separate bookings, so check connection times yourself.

Plan your day on the road

Four points that decide whether the trip works.

Start early

Crater driving is commonly given as 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the last descent can be earlier than the closing time. Do not count on a late descent. A crater permit allows one entry within 24 hours.

Avoid night driving

Official travel advice recommends against overland driving after dark. Build your return so that you are not on the road at night.

Ask what is included

Compare the pickup point, the return time, whether the vehicle is private or shared, which permits are paid, meals and the descent. An offer that shows only a starting price tells you little. See the fees guide for what is charged separately.

Dress for the rim

The crater rim lies at about 2,300 m and is cooler than the floor. Bring warm layers for early morning drives.

Arusha to Ngorongoro: frequently asked questions

How far is Arusha from Ngorongoro?

The road to the Ngorongoro area is about 180 km. The distance to the Loduare Gate is often given as about 160 km. Which number applies depends on where you count the end of the trip.

How long does the drive take?

Plan 3 to 4 hours. A shorter time of about 2 hours is quoted for the paved road to the gate, but traffic and stops usually add to it. Allow extra time for the descent into the crater.

Can I do the crater in one day from Arusha?

It is possible to book a long day, but it leaves less time on the crater floor. A night in Karatu or on the rim gives you a calmer start. Ask any operator for the pickup time and the return time before you book.

Which airport should I fly into?

Kilimanjaro International Airport is the usual choice. Lake Manyara Airport in the Karatu district mainly serves non-scheduled flights. Neither is at the crater itself.

Can I drive myself?

A guide in the vehicle is generally required for the crater, so self-drive visitors should confirm the current rules before they plan this. Crater driving also needs a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
