Olduvai Gorge at a glance

Olduvai Gorge, also spelled Oldupai, is known for fossils and stone tools that shaped the study of human evolution. The conservation authority links the excavations with Louis and Mary Leakey and names finds such as Zinjanthropus (boisei), Homo habilis and Homo erectus. It is a major research site. It is not a literal "birthplace of all people", and this guide does not present it as one.

The gorge lies inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The area was listed as a World Heritage Site for natural values in 1979, and a cultural criterion was added in 2010. The area includes archaeological sites as well as wildlife habitat, so Olduvai is a different kind of visit from a game drive on the crater floor.

Fees add up in layers

The entry fee for the Conservation Area, the vehicle permit and the Olduvai fee are separate items. The published base entry for a non-East African adult is $60 (children 5 to 15: $20), and one operator lists $70.80 including VAT. Prices are as of October 2026.

Time of year

The gorge is described as open all year. Roads and weather still affect the drive, especially in the rainy months. Check the seasons before you fix a date.

Walking in the gorge

Because the excavation areas need an official guide, you cannot simply wander in on your own. Arrange the guide through your operator, and follow the guide's instructions about where to walk.

Before you go: a short checklist

Olduvai rewards a visit that is planned in advance. A few points settle most of the questions.

  • Guide: confirm that an official guide is part of the plan if you want to see the excavation areas. The museum and the excavation areas are different parts of the stop.
  • Fee: ask whether the Olduvai fee is already in your quote, and what it covers. The $35.40 figure is the 2026 amount and also includes Shifting Sands.
  • Timing: check the current timetable before you go, and ask how long the stop takes within your day.
  • Footing: bring sturdy shoes for walking in the gorge, and sun protection for the open ground.
  • Health: malaria risk is high all year below 2,500 m, so ask a doctor about protection before the trip. The rim of the main crater is at about 2,300 m, and people with heart or breathing conditions should ask about altitude.

Olduvai is a good stop for visitors who want something other than animals. It adds the human story of the area to a trip that is otherwise about wildlife.

Other places in the area

Olduvai fits well with these.

The Serengeti is a separate park with its own tariffs and is not covered on this page.
