The Ngorongoro Crater at a glance
The crater is the best-known part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, but it is only one part. It covers about 260 kmยฒ, measures roughly 20 km across and drops about 610 m from the rim to the floor. It formed when a volcano collapsed some 2.5 million years ago. An older brochure from the conservation authority gives a larger area, so treat all area figures as approximate.
The floor holds grassland, swamps, rivers and forest. Animals move in and out of the crater, so it is not an enclosed reserve. The rim sits at around 2,300 m, and it is much cooler up there than on the floor. Pack warm layers for the early drive down.

How a crater visit works
A crater visit is a vehicle game drive with a guide, not a self-guided walk.
Vehicle and guide
Only four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed on the floor. The visitor rules for 2026 also put a licensed guide in every vehicle, so a self-drive visit is not something to plan on.
No walking in the crater
Walking safaris are not allowed inside the Ngorongoro Crater. Guided walks happen on the highland and rim routes instead, for example at Empakaai, and they need an armed ranger and prior booking.
Stay in the vehicle
You stay in the vehicle except at designated stops. Going off the track needs a permit. The rules list a maximum of 5 vehicles at one sighting and a minimum distance of 25 m from the animals.
The picnic stop
Ngoitoktok Spring is an approved place to get out and eat. Hippos live there, and elephants and lions also come by. Hold on to your food, because raptors snatch it from hands and plates.

Descent roads, gate hours and time on the floor
Details change, so confirm them with your operator on the day.
Older documentation from the conservation authority describes the roads like this. Seneto is for the descent only, Lerai is for the ascent only, and Lemala and Sopa are used in both directions. Treat that as the usual pattern and not as a guarantee for your travel day.
Driving is listed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The same older rules set the Seneto descent cutoff at 4 p.m. A late descent is therefore not something to count on. Start early, because the first hours are also the coolest and the quietest.
The crater permit allows one entry within 24 hours. That is not the same as staying on the floor for 24 hours. Ask your operator how long you will be on the floor and when the vehicle has to be back at the ascent road.

What the crater visit costs in 2026
Entry, crater service and vehicle permit are separate items. Prices in US dollars, as listed in 2026.
| Item | Portal tariff (base) | Operator list (VAT included) |
|---|---|---|
| Entry, non-East African adult (16+) | $60 | $70.80 per person and 24 hours |
| Entry, child 5 to 15 | $20 | $23.60 |
| Entry, child under 5 | Free | Free |
| Crater service fee | $250 | $295 per vehicle and descent |
| Vehicle permit, foreign-registered, 2,001 to 3,000 kg | โ | $177 per entry |
The two columns differ by 18 percent, which matches a VAT surcharge, but the final amount on your permit or quote is what counts. The crater service fee is charged per vehicle, so a shared vehicle lowers the crater share per person. Details and booking steps are on the fees page.
Three places on the crater floor
Game drives usually combine these habitats.
Lerai Forest
A woodland refuge for animals including rhinos and elephants. You cannot count on seeing any of them at a set time of day.
Lake Magadi
A shallow soda lake. Birds gather here by season, flamingos among them, and the numbers depend on the state of the water.
Ngoitoktok Spring
The picnic stop with hippos, and a place where elephants and lions also appear. Follow your guide's instructions at all times.

Ngorongoro Crater: frequently asked questions
Can I walk in the Ngorongoro Crater?
No. Walking safaris are not allowed inside the crater. You see it from a four-wheel-drive vehicle with a guide. Guided walks take place on highland routes with an armed ranger.
How long can I stay on the crater floor?
The permit allows a single entry within 24 hours, but that does not mean you can stay all day. Driving hours are listed as 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Seneto descent has an earlier cutoff in older rules. Ask your operator for the exact plan.
Is the crater a closed zoo?
No. The floor has grassland, swamps, rivers and forest, and animals can move in and out.
Do I need a four-wheel-drive vehicle?
Yes. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed on the floor, and the visitor rules call for a guide in the vehicle.
Can I get out of the vehicle for lunch?
Only at designated stops such as Ngoitoktok Spring. Keep food covered, because raptors take it.
Is this the official crater website?
No. This is an independent guide. It is not connected to the conservation authority, a safari operator or a lodge.
